From January 1 next year, all employers of foreign maids must give their maids one day off a week or pay them a day's wages as compensation. The new rule was announced in Parliament on March 5 and will apply to all maid contracts inked or renewed from that date.

Why maids are allowed to have rest? They already have much rests when they are sleeping or when they're eating. Maids offered themselves to work for us, so they have to carry on their works for us, not easily resting here and there. It's the job for workers. Even workers in offices have to work hard on the time allocated. Thus, the time allocated for maids is 24/7, so they have to work for us in 24/7.

Sometimes if the maids are given much time to rest, then the maids will use the time to rest to do bad things. For instance, the case had once happened to myself so that's why I take this as an example. My family allowed our maid to rest, so by the time she was resting, she had gone to somewhere else and she met an unknown guy. That unknown guy asked her to steal all jewelleries in my home and run away with him. Finally, the maid did that. Such a waste of money having such maid.

The argument that working women also needs the rest is invalid. The comparison between the two poses a gargantuan difference. Working women actually don't work as long as these maids. At most, they would work 9 hours a day while maids work at least 12 hours a day, 7 times a week, full-time. Although these working women work only 3 hours less, they still have lunch breaks and public holidays to rest while maids do not even have the luxury to enjoy a day off. The argument against the law that working women also needs the rest irks me as it only shows how selfish these people are to think that one day without help will compromise their rest. House work is not a big deal and takes little effort- after eating, wash your dishes. What more if you have children. You could distribute chores to them and this will help take the burden of house work off your shoulders. It is just 24 hours! One day without help won't kill you. The whole thing is an exaggeration and it reflects that Singaporeans do actually put themselves first before others.

"Maids may do something stupid like going to the zoo or going to jurong bird park rather than resting." I am not sure why Samuel Heng considers going to the zoo or Jurong Bird Park as a 'stupid' activity to be done on a rest day. Please clarify.

i am in support of this issue as the day off given to the maids in singapore is to give them a break form the work load thats given to prevent the maids from falling sick. To me, it is wrong to think that the maids would fall to bad company because they are old and mature enough to think of herself to whether or not the company she is in is a good or a bad one. i suggest that the maids should have they day off on the weekdays and after 4pm. this is too be sure that they have don't their housework fully and are able to enjoy herself.

I am disagree with Asyraff that the maids might slack and become used to be having a rest day as not all maids are the same and some deserve to have a rest day. By saying that all the maids would slack, he is saying that every maids are bad and not hardworking. They deserves some rest for their hardwork.

I agree to letting maids have a day off as it might be able to decrease child abuse done by maids to their employers' children. Child abuse by maids are normally done because the maids are either too stress or overworked. And by having a day off, maids would be able to meet up with friends as stated in arguement(2) in the supporting collum by ms teo. Stated by Manpower Minister Mr Tan Chuan-Jin that it is internationally as a basic labour right. : "A weekly rest day is regarded internationally as a basic labour right" . I also suggest that it might be better that the maids would have a day off during weekends as employers would normally have days off too. And so, employers would not worry about their children when they are at work which would affect their working progress. Employers can also ask if their maids would want a pay increase instead of a day off. And also, bring their maids out together with the entire family if they are worried that their maids would mix with bad company and disappear after their day off.

I disagree with people giving maids a rest day because the maid might spend too much money on their rest day like going shopping and have no more money left. They will start stealing people's money and become a thief !Maids may also get influenced by bad company and will start hanging out with them.this will make them do smoking or something like that

Yes . Maids help you to take care of your children and elderly. So why they cannot have one day free? The maids are also people .Your company must give you two days to rest, why you cannot give youe maids one day to rest ?Most of maids are foreigners, they do not have parents ,relatives but maybe one or two friends. Letting them to meet up with friends like we children do.

the argument that maids should get a day off, as maids are here to work for their employers. What if they get into the wrong company or mix with friends which are in contact with the bad company. Our maids might get influenced and become more and more lazy in doing their work and they will be day-dreaming of going out on their rest day, this will cause them to lose focus in their work. I would rather pay them a salary increment than to let them go out. I suggest that we pay them an increment in their salary than to let them go out, i think most maids would gladly accept the pay increment instead of going out as nowadays Singapore's food, transport, daily neccesities are very expensive. If they go out they must pay for their own transport, food and for their own leisure activities.

I agree that maids should have weekly rest days off. As my family have a maid too, i c0uld see how hard and tiring her work is. She should have more rest to gain more energy to do her duities. What's the point of tiring maids if they, in the end, do not have the energy to do what she's suppose to? That will hurt both sides. I think that, maids deserve more rest, so that they can do their duties well. Some maids get hurt, but don't even have the treatment. Why? Their employers doesnt allow it. Some employers may treat their maids well, but some don't. Maids are human beings too, just like us. They deserve their rest and treatments too. They can't possibly work 24/7 all day.

I agree to let the maids to have their weekly rest. Even us had our weekly rest so why maids cannot have a rest? This rest will let the maids to rest more and will increase their efficiency to work. Although some people think that by letting the maids to rest weekly, they will fall into bad company. But i feel that we should give it a try for this and maybe the outcome will be surprisingly good.

I have to agree with maids getting a rest day off. Their job constantly needs their fullest attention as their work never ends. It is only right for them to have a day off to relax and enjoy themselves. However, I also have to disagree as maids might get into bad influence with the company they mix with. They might get influenced to do things that are negative.

I am against the idea of giving maids a day off. When given a day off, maids will go out and meet their friends. These friends can be a bad influence towards the maid and change the maid's attitude. Maids may tend to become rebellious towards their employers. Thus, i don't think maids should be given a day off.

I am in support with the arguments because the maids are humans too. If we give them more rest days, who knows if they'll work harder, right? If we stand in their shoes, you wouldn't have the energy to work if you didn't have any rest.

I agree that maids should have weekly rest day as this is being fair to them . They work during the weekdays 24/7 with just breaks in between , and it's the rest day that they can truly rest and enjoy a day out with their friends . Being a maid is like any other occupation , and they only have a day off , while we have the weekends .

I agree to maids needing a rest off once a month, but they might do something illegal outside without proper guidance. I suggest that the employers could bring their maids out once a month to relax or shop, this way, the employers could keep and eye on their maids and the maids can also enjoy their day off. :)

I agree with supporting the arguements.Working as a maid for 24 hours each day is too much without a weekly day rest/break.Being a maid is an occupation, not a slave.Humans are not robot, they need their rest.

I am in support that maids should have a weekly day off as they are humans with feelings too , they might get very stress during times , they will express it in some ways that we doesn't support , so we need to give them time to rest , they are also not paid to be tortured , both mentally and pyshical stress . Even if it is not weekly day off , they could take a rest day one time per two weeks ,they can relax their mind , they might even give their best attitude in doing their roles in the house .

I agree that maids should have a weekly rest day because they are humans after all. When the adults are busy at work, maids are the ones who take cares of their children for them. Owners should at least give their maids a rest day instead of just giving them their wages. They need to rest from the exhaustion as well. Besides, giveing them a day off helps them to improve their productivity at work. If the owners kept keeping them at home, the maids will get depression and may do something silly to their children. therefore, we should give maids a weekly rest day.

I am against the one day rest for maids.Mothers do not get one day rest and never get pay by family in contrast, maids get pay by owner so why one day rest when mother dont even enjoy one. If maids do have a one day rest credit, they may even ask for more things if they do not want to rest. Moreover, maids do go out with the owners and can treat like a resting time for them and can even bond with each other.

i agree with Tan Ye Sheng that If they did not have a break or rest, they might have too much stress which might cause their employer harm. (Kill the employer, etc). there have already been alot of incidents of maids killing their empolyers as their employers doesnt treat them well thus they should be given off to relieve their stress and meet up with their friends and have fun for a day before they come back for work the next following day.

Maids are like all other human beings, and like all other human beigns they require adequate rest once a week, even soldier's are given day's off,so why should a maid slave off 24/7 a week, worst than a soldier,if given one day off, they can relax and meet up and have fun with their friends. If they are given this one day to rest, they will be refreshed physically and mentally so they can work better.

I am against the idea of giving the maids a day off. This is simply because we will never know what bad company, crimes, or any sort of negative influence they might do or mix with. They come to Singapore to work, and not to enjoy the things (shopping, having fun, doing crimes, etc.) So yeah. B)

I suggest that maid should be given a day off as we can give them some freedom, after working for six day straight. Singaporeans always want to have at least a day off a week, so do they. Imagine if you must work for 8 hours everyday, would you complain? i bet you will. So ithink giving a day off for maid i =s a MUST.. i'm JamilulHayat and i approve this message. give maid freedom.....

I support that maids should have a weekly rest day because they are not slaves. How lazy are Singaporeans to be so codependant to their maid? Most people dont even have maids, Some have cleaning ladys once a week but we treat them well and with respect. It is shocking to see how maids are being talked about here. Of course they have the right to go shopping, have a boyfriend, be tired or get pregnant. Why would they not? How can one think that is our right but deny it for maids? This is shocking to witness this and reminds me the slavery of African slave in US. I thought we went a long way since then but apparently not. I suggest that maids should have a day off instead of being at home all the day 24/7.

I agree with the argument 'Maids will have a better support system as they can meet with their friends.' Meeting with their friends allow them to socialise with their friends and thus will help them relieve stress and thus they would not be tired out by their work. This coud also make them be more able to work more effectively.
