Freelancing? Good or Bad?

Almost 70% of the developers and designers are into freelancing. Some of them rely on this as their only mode of income while some are doing this behind the scene. Some companies are OK with this while some of them use a magnifying glass( or spy) to detect this. Some finds it ethical while for some it is a "nonsense". I am perplexed..hence starting this debate to get some information.

I do not support freelancing. The reason being the you have to work on independently and to get updated by the readings and meets. But to work within a group its wonderful as it brings a flow of ideas and thus you can grow with the team. Again once you are doing freelancing at the same time with your job, it is actually breaking some ethics as you are utilizing the resources from the office. Sometimes your concentration is more on money making instead of the quality of the current work.

If you are a SmartPhone (iPhone, Android) programmer you would be nuts not to freelance at this time! I heard one guy in California freelancing iPhone development at $175 an hour!

@Nari: Do you think Freelancing is hampering a lot of start-ups and SMEs in the battle where costing is playing an important role?

I have runinto some freelancers that may be 20 times more productive than a regular employee who is trying to figure out the nuances of iphone programming from scratch. But before you call a freelancer, you better have clearly specced out requirements so that you can make the best use of their time. If you consider the cost and the productivity you may still come out the winner SMEs or not. For mobile apps, there are studies that show that free apps generate 10 times more revenues through ads than paid apps. So you better have that part of your business plan thoughtout also ahead of time if it involves eyeballs an revenues.

if you are a dreamer, capable of multi-tasking, and ready to take risks, freelancing is what you should do. its more challenging but it brings a lot of freedom along with. you can work at your free will, at your own terms. it gives you a base to know the market and learn its behavior. you need not always end up being an entrepreneur, but you can train yourself to become a highly valuable resource.

Freelancing is good as long as you are not doing it during office hours or compensating office jobs.. The biggest question is - how you are utilizing those money and contacts? Only a few Freelancers have the vision to take it forward, leave the day job and start a company.

Honest freelancing (without stiffing your primary company) is hard. I have done it once and it takes a lot from you.
